Jonathan Sheppard could be on the cusp of history. The 68-year-old trainer navigated a stellar season with Augustin Stable’s Forever Together. In March, the 4-year-old filly refused to train. By November, she had won the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf and a possible Eclipse Award as the leading turf filly or mare. With her Eclipse Award, Sheppard would join fellow Hall of Famer Sidney Watters Jr. as the only men to train a champion over jumps and on the flat.

Better Talk Now - the multi-millionaire BC winner

It's hard to imagine that Better Talk Now, Graham Motion’s remarkable, late-running nine-year-old gelding, would ever cost his trainer a good nights sleep. After all, Better Talk Now's victory in the 2004 Breeders Cup Turf gave Motion a national presence, one which has only grown as Better Talk Now continues to perform at the highest level of racing with 14 victories in 47 career starts and earnings of more than $4.2 million.

Is Conformation Relevant?
/This year’s yearling sales are just beginning with Fasig-Tipton July in Kentucky quickly followed by Fasig-Tipton August taking place in Saratoga. Then it is the turn of the monstrous Keeneland September catalogue to lay host to thousands of blue-blooded Thoroughbreds desperate to have their conformation analyzed by trainers, owners and those conformation experts – the bloodstock agents. The 2007 September Keeneland yearling sale sold nearly four thousand horses for just short of four hundred million dollars in seven books, each illustrated with photographs of the current superstars sold at last year’s sale. Does examining a horse’s conformation really give you a better idea as to whether you are looking at next year’s superstar?

Derby Starters - where do they go from there?
/Led by Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, the three-year-old crop of 2007 rearranged a lot of people's thinking on what it takes to succeed on the first Saturday of May and beyond.Street Sense not only became the first colt to win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and the Run for the Roses the following spring, but along with the Derby's second and third place finishers, Hard Spun and Curlin, thrived later in the year. So did Tiago and Any Given Saturday, who finished seventh and eighth in the Derby and joined the top three in the starting gate for the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Nasal Strips - increasing performance, reducing EIPH
/Nasal strips' future in Thoroughbred racing seemed limitless in the fall of 1999. Just two weeks after longshot Burrito won a race at Keeneland wearing one, 29 of the 101 horses competing in the 1999 Breeders’ Cup at Gulfstream Park November 6th had the 4-by-6-inch strip affixed 1.5 inches above their nostrils.
